Of every topic I offer when a church or group invites me to speak, one gets requested more than all the others combined: rest, and the exhaustion of trying to carry everything alone. That request tells me something about where a lot of women actually are right now, underneath the composed version they bring to church on Sunday.

Jesus’ invitation was never to the people who had it together. It was to the weary and heavy laden (Matthew 11:28) — an invitation that assumes exhaustion is the normal condition, not the exception. When I speak on this topic now, I try to spend less time convincing women they are tired — they already know — and more time actually walking them toward the specific, practical shape of the rest Jesus is offering.
